Walter Green Fellowships

The Walter Green Fellowships are for graduate students who intend a career in public service or government and are working in a paid job or internship for at least 15 hours a week. The paid job or paid internship must be related to their program in the DC Metro area at the time of application. (GW employees are not eligible) Successful applicants will be representatives of the goals of public service and government, such as policy and engaging/working with the community.

The academic year fellowships will be up to $6,000 for full-time study and up to $3,000 for part-time study. This award (does not cover fees) is stackable but does not support the summer semester, only fall and spring. Students who have not received fellowship funding for their study will receive preference for this fellowship. Students graduating in December will be considered for special one-semester only awards.

 

Eligibility Requirements

  • Prospective or current students studying in a master's degree program on the Foggy Bottom campus (does not apply to distance education programs, or courses or hybrid courses) in a graduate program (doctoral students are not eligible) in either CCAS, ESIA, GWSB (excluding Executive programs), CPS or GSEHD. 
  • Applicants must be working in a paid job or internship for at least 15 hours per week. The paid job or paid internship must be related to their program in the DC Metro area at the time of application.
  • Graduate students at the Law School, SEAS, SMHS and/or Milken are not eligible for this fellowship.
  • Students working at GW (internship or job, paid or unpaid) or in a benefited position at GW are not eligible.

  • Essay
    • This essay should address your short and long-term academic and professional goals and include concrete, detailed examples of the impact your studies will have on your intended or current career in public service. The essay should be explicit in how your job/internship is related to public service and how this fellowship will benefit you beyond monetary value. (2-3 pages, double spaced, 12 point font)
  • Resume
    • In addition to listing any relevant professional experience, the applicant should list on one page any honors/fellowships received, scholastic achievements, extracurricular activities that pertain to their graduate study and any other significant academic accomplishments.
  • Transcripts
    • Current full-time students with at least 9 GW credit hours completed and part-time students with at least 6 GW credit hours complete are only required to submit graduate transcripts. If you do not meet this requirement, you must submit unofficial undergraduate transcripts. Incoming students must submit undergraduate transcripts.
  • Professional Recommendation
    • Walter Green Fellowships are intended to assist students who are working/interning either full or part-time in government or public service and are pursuing or wish to pursue graduate study at GW to enhance their knowledge and skills and intend a life-long career in government or other public service. Letters of Recommendation should make mention of how these factors intersect with the student's experience or potential.
