Request for Permission to Work

The Request for Permission to Work form can be used by fully-funded students to appeal the work restriction of 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.

The intent of providing fellowship stipends is to support living expenses for students so they can study full-time. Full-time study means not only taking 9 credits a semester, but devoting full attention to academic work. Jobs of any type necessarily detract from academics. We realize, however, the wonderful job opportunities and internships available to graduate students in the Washington Metropolitan area. Therefore, we give careful consideration to requests for permission to work or hold other employment while receiving full funding.

International Students: Please note many international student visas are subject to additional employment restrictions. Most F-1 visa holders are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week during semesters they are enrolled in coursework. Please consult the International Services Office to verify any visa requirements prior to accepting employment.
